John Cooper Works for MINI Cooper

Here is something else I saw while at MINI Peabody today:
Aftersales business development & marketing MINI dealer bulletin
Based on requests from MINI dealers, please find enclosed ienformation about the John Cooper Works Tuning Kit for the MINI Cooper. We have a limited number of this kit available in the US.
The JCW kit is a complete performance package that is designed to take full advantage of the engine’s design. The JCW Kit for the MINI Cooper includes a machined cylinder head for better airflow, “cat-back” exhaust system, air filter element and updated ECU programming. These carefully engineered performance modifications will bring the MINI Cooper to the 126hp horsepower level. The torque has been improved to 114 lbft.
As the kit delivers only a minor increase in horsepower and torque, the main benefit is the increased performance feel and mid range torque of the MINI Cooper.

NOTE: This kit is only available for the manual transmission MINI Cooper! It must not be installed on cars with optional automatic gearbox.
I think I saw a price of $2650 plus labor, but don’t hold me to it 😉

  1. Ian,
That’s odd as they fit it to the CVT (automatic) in the UK. I even got a reply directly from Mike Cooper that the kit works just fine on the CVT.

  2. That’s interesting Brad.
I remember reading somewhere that there was concern over the load/stress on the CVT transmission. Perhaps with the (presumably) greater number of CVT owners here, MINI USA did not want to take a chance.
Plus, if they have only a “limited number”, they might anticipate selling them all without needing to “risk” a CVT installation …

  3. My guess is that it might very well be within tolerance, but in the upper range. And MINIUSA does not want to ‘push it’. Like if you knew you could lift 300lbs before you blew out your knee, you probally wouldn’t be lifting 290lbs on a regular basis, just in case. (Ok, so this might only apply if you were the 6 Million Dollar Man, but I think it makes sense…

  4. I don’t think Cooper owners will be storming
dealerships anytime soon. $2650 for minimal
    horsepower gain is beyond comprehension.
People would be better off just buying an “S”

  5. There is a discussion about whether someone should bring their Mini Cooper to Mexico. The big problem is that there are “topes” BIG bumps in the road not to speak of thousands of roads in disrepair. What I would like to know is …can you raise up the Mini Cooper so you’ll have a higher clearance?

    Thanks
