When I picked up GBMINI#3 from Sublime Restorations last week, the “SES” light was on – I dropped in to MINI Peabody and they did various tests and cleared the light.
Tonight on the way into town for dinner, the light came on again 😦
So I guess I will be back to MINI Peabody soon – hope this is not going to be a regular occurrence …
UPDATE: On the way to MINI Peabody the light cleared itself; nevertheless the log as read by the techs showed an “O2 sensor” fault.
Apparently, as Todd wrote in the comments, there is a known issue / interaction between the automatic transmission control algorithms and the engine computer – see this MINI internal service measure:
Since it was written, the issue has been partly identified and the dealership does not now need to hold the car; but a software fix under development is not yet available.
Ian – after speaking with the local dealer a couple of weeks ago, it seems that this is a problem with many of the auto transmission Cooper S models. There have been quite a few instances of the same behaviour occurring repeatedly as it appears yours is. From what I’ve heard, MINI engineers are looking into the problem. It doesn’t seem that there’s anything actually going wrong with the engine except for throwing the check engine light. That’s probably not too much comfort but this is not an isolated problem. I’m sure the MINI engineers will have a software fix soon.
Cheers.
Hell, I had CK engine light, windows going up and down on there own, Air condition not coming on and then coming on by it’s self, engine shutting down for no reason and so on. For a solid year I have had no problems, except for the dreaded stumble.
If the car wasn’t so much fun I’d have gotten rid of it a long time ago.
Good Luck.
See this thread on MINI2 and this thread on NAM.
Thank you Todd for giving me more info on this issue.
Have you been able to clear the SES light since your difficulties?
After nearly six months, the fault recurred recently and I got the update which should eliminate the issue.
