Today I received a nice package from MikeyTheMINI who runs NewMINIstuff in England.
For GBMINI#3 I decided to stay with a Kenwood aftermarket stereo so I could still use my Keg, but I wanted to avoid having to install another IR remote to link the steering wheel controls to the head unit.
Instead, by ordering a European head unit through Mike, I could also use a wired interface … so today I received the new head unit & everything needed to install it into GBMINI#3:
I ordered the Kenwood W8531 from Mike – I wanted at least a two line display which crossed off some off the lower spec models. Mike included the fascia adaptor, antenna adaptor, and a wiring adaptor including the MFSW->Stereo converter for steering wheel control.
Now I just have to find the time (and courage) to disassemble the new MINI!
I so wish I had the skill set and know how to do any kind of work on my MCS. I probably could handle more than I give myself credit for, but I am not mechanically inclined like that. I would hate to try and then screw something up. I’m jealous.
Now only if there was some kind of MINI mod that involved crunching numbers (besides paying for the mods), then I’d be set. :o)
Actually with the stuff sent from Mike, this new stereo install will be VERY easy – removing the downtubes is the most tricky part …
I also have the super advantage of working with a couple of mechanically skilled guys, to fill in the gaps where I fail 😉
Sweet! Judging by the return address on the package that arrived today, my wife got me an ice>Link: Plus for my b-day (tomorrow). I’m really hoping that I’ll be happy with that and the factory HU. I like the integrated look of the factory unit, and the fact that the MFSW buttons work as they should. Plan B will, of course, be buying something from MtM. 🙂
I know I sound a bit curmudgeoney (I *am* almost 29!) but I think aftermarket HUs have gotten hideous, asthetically. This new one isn’t too bad; maybe the Brits have better taste?
The Pioneer DEH-880 (http://www.mercadolibre.com.ar/org-img/original/MLA/042005/16101833_4702.jpg) I had in about four different Jeep Cherokees was functional and good-looking, and you just can’t find anything like that, now.
