One of the still-not-right parts of the interior of GBMINI#3 is the screws holding the door panels to the door – they really show up with the red matched paint of the trim, and they shouldn’t.
Recently Gabe reviewed the MyMINI knee pad and I wandered over to MyMINIparts to have a closer look … I did actually order a knee pad but unlike Gabe, now it has arrived I don’t think I will fit it; it does not give a perfect fit to the down tube, and it makes the downtube even thicker so increasing the chance of my leg leaning on it. I should have realized that before, but I didn’t.
Also, it fits to the down tube high up and my knee rests below the bottom of the part!
Anyway, while I was at MyMINIparts I looked around at what else they offer and found some “chrome” caps to cover the door trim screw holes! Ordered, received and fitted:
I would disagree with the “chrome” description; they are more like polished metal and have a somewhat rough look rather than the pure smooth chrome look of the factory “real chrome” elsewhere in the car; but for $8 for the set of four, there’s not much to complain about – and they do look better than the bare holes.
If anyone wants my unused knee pad at a discount, let me know …
Ian – it should also fits perfectly down low. That’s where I have mine.
And btw… I just wrote a review for these plugs last weekend. I’m posting it on Monday for MF 😉
I wondered about fitting the knee pad down low – but doesn’t the “shaped” top then look strange? Hard to tell from the pic on your web entry.
Can’t wait to see what you wrote about the screw caps – are they in your MINI still? That is the decider in the end I guess; they remain in GBMINI#3 because even if they aren’t so “chromey” they are better than holes!
Ian:
I have ordered many parts from MyMINI, Pete is a super guy! I am sure if you had any questions/problems he would take care of them. I purchased some drving lights to him, and mentioned it was for my brithday. He called the distributor to make sure I got the item in time, as it was on back order. He also hooked me up with some witing diagrams when I asked questions, and also managed to pack in a specal birthday gift. I have seldom seen such an honest and nice parts dealer. It is people like Pete that make the MINI community great!!

Ian,
I personally like the open holes, it gives the interior an industrial look that first attracted me to the cars interior.
To each his own but for my taste there it’s tooooo much bling.
Nice to be home in Altadena got delayed in Heathrow an hour. That is one giant airport! Tough flight as I had to sit center row next to a rather large, albeit nice, gentleman on flight from Heathrow. He had just completed 2 weeks diving in Scotland, Ireland and England. Loved all but found the Irish a bit antagonistic and depressed.
No sleep, crappy food but smooth flight.
What’s your price on the knee pad?
RB
Ian – Yeah the caps are still there 🙂 I actually quite like them. I agree that they could be more ‘chrome’ but they’re great for $8!
I’ll try to snap a pic tomorrow for you so you can see how I fit my knee bolster. It probably looks better on the darker trim but I still feel it’s a decent looking fit down low.
Also agree with what you said about it making the down-tube wider and thus, something you bump up against more. However since it’s soft cushioned leather I didn’t see that as a downside now that I’ve used it. However that was my biggest concern before I installed it in the car.
Joshua,
I can only agree with you about MyMINIparts; my dealings with them remind me of me (and my MINI circuit) – inexpensive, honest and keen to assist 🙂
RB,
Glad you got back – did you read about Heathrow T5; when they finish it, it will be as good as the all other terminals combined!
Are these caps metal or plastic?
I’ve seen them before but cringed at them as I usually do at all the “chrome everything you can” parts. But I can imagine your screw holes really stood out on the red and it must be an improvement.
I wonder if these could be made in anthracite and other interior-matching colors.
Josh,
They are metal … I should have taken a “before fitting” pic!
I still want an anthracite tach.
Why not take some Wenol Blue (metal polish) and a Dremel with a felt buffing pad to them to shine ’em up?
