MovableType Upgrade

Tonight I upgraded GBMINI to MovableType V3.2; let me know if you have any problems with the weblog / comments / etc.
The upgrade is claimed “the easiest yet” but that is wrong for me at least because I had to update some internal “DBI” on the server before the new MovableType would run. After that though, everything was plain sailing.

One of the biggest changes for me is the improved spam comment protection – I get few spam comments anyway but just once or so each month some spambot will latch on to GBMINI and throw 50+ comments in a few seconds! The upgrade should prevent these reaching the readable pages.

As a package, MovableType does all that I need to run my weblog – I particularly like the amount of customisation possible with it – you can almost program the way you want the weblog pages to look; maybe too complex for many users (although you certainly don’t need to use all that flexibility).

  1. Ian,
I hahe not made the upgrade as of yet because I run my blog from the root directory and I am unsure if it will be an easy conversion. I have had to use many plug-ins to keep the spam down to a minimun. i wish the spammers would keep to themselves.

  2. Harvey, renaming “mt-comments.cgi” to something else will significantly reduce spam – I did that from day one and as mentioned, I get nearly zero spam (but when I do, it is always a burst). Pre V3.20, I didn’t have any anti-spam plugins running.

  3. Well after two weeks, MT 3.2 has blocked 70+ spam comments from reaching my web site pages; a couple it was not sure about and asked me to review (they were junk too), but the rest it just sent off to junk without bothering me at all.
    Nice!
