GP production number

I got my production number today from MINI of Peabody! However it’s clearly not yet a real MINI, since the website says it’s a BMW (and following the links takes me to the BMW owner pages!)

If you’re brave enough to pretend to be a BMW owner, this is what you see:

1-866-ASK-MINI says “vehicle is in production, estimated completion date July 14, 2006” …

  1. I wonder if the VIN is even correct – with it going to the BMW site, maybe they’ll issue completely new VINs in a few weeks, when the cars “properly” exist.

  2. Isn’t July 14th cutting it close for vehicle completion..? It’s got to get to the dock, get on a boat, get to CA, clear customs and get to Monterrey in time for MTTS…
It is can be done, but they’re cutting it close..!

Is this in addition to GBMINI or a replacement..?

  3. I agree Gavin – the web timetable is not correct if it’s actually when the car is finished being built. The boat trip is much longer for west coast (including the panama canal), and the cars are being built in Italy, not Oxford …

  4. Ian…congrats!!! 🙂

Back when I ordered my ’05 MCS, I got an email from BMW inviting me into the BMW owners circle…so my MINI VIN works for both the MINI & BMW sites.

  5. No worries about getting the GPs to Monterey because they are flying them over. Yes, I said *flying* them over and spending a bundle on the special delivery. Normal channels of shipment including VDC prep are being, ahem, expedited. ; )

The full VINs do start with “WMR” btw as you can see the full VIN in the Order Detail section of the BMW Owner’s Circle.

Having BMW handle all this makes more sense as to why MINI USA has so little info. I’m guessing BMW is processing the GPs because of the prior relationship with Bertone in Italy but it still feels “odd”.

  6. Technically the travel is still “up in the air” so-to-speak but it’s going to be really close.

They’ve got to make the decision soon because you can just imagine 40-some unhappy GP buyers and no GPs. : (

  7. just as long as mine comes along to my garage, I don’t care how it gets here ! 🙂
