TGICR day 4 – Skyline drive and worse weather

Today our so-called fast group turned in to the slow group: we wanted to drive Skyline Drive (national forest, speed limit 35), while the others wanted to catch a brewery tour (they picked the wrong choice and missed a great drive and fabulous lunch ice-cream stop!)

Skyline Drive is less twisty than yesterdays Blue Ridge Parkway, but arguably has better views – and lots more wildlife! We saw a black bear cross in front of us, multiple deer, and assorted smaller animals …

Our lunch stop was Cones & Bones in Hagerstown, another A1 ice cream stop (and lunch across the road was excellent too!)

The long, slower, drive on Skyline – and the poor weather and excessive roadworks, meant we arrived at and immediately left the hotel for dinner, chasing the other MINIs to Leibys … Worth it though … 🙂

  1. Ok, now I am jealous. When I lived in VA I drove, hiked the Skyline Drive numerous times and never saw anything more exciting than deer. Sounds like a great day.

  2. FANTASTIC photos Ian..I’m glad you all got to enjoy the
most beautiful Skyline Drive…except for that inclement
weather..Murray called yesterday to say it was the FIRST
really bad weather of the trip so far..!!!…Is Savannah
still in the ‘lead’ with 42 cars..?? 😀

  3. Robert,
It’s really hard to know the MINI count – people come, go, join us just for the night, etc.
I think we had between 15 & 20 MINIs at dinner last night.

    Paul,
The black bear was a shock – not very big (just a large dog size) and it walked with a loping gait. Wish I’d had time to grab the camera!

    Stephanie,
Yes, Savannah wins – although the ice cream winner might be elsewhere now (for me at least!)
