On the move once again

If you can see this post, you’re seeing WestHost instead of Site5! One of their major features is the use of “RAID” for hard drive mirroring, so a single drive failure doesn’t leave my website down for a day … the fact that my personal PC has the same feature and in my opinion ANY hosting company should do the same, doesn’t appear to have occurred to Site5 😦

Anyway, let me know if anything is strange for you; but it should all be fine!

  1. I hope this works well for you. I’m not convinced that RAID is the most important feature; you can still have lousy performance and spotty uptime even if your disks are protected from major catastrophe. My mail host, FastMail, seems to have had major issues with their RAID hardware in the past, causing some downtime, too.

This whole hosting thing is a major PITA, especially if you don’t need “commercial” levels of service. I’d just be happy with “consistent”.

… on second thought, TextDrive seems to be pretty consistently spotty, so scratch that. 🙂

  2. After looking at WestHost’s site this morning, they look really compelling. The pricing’s extremely reasonable, and I like their VPS configuration. Looks like you’ve got near-root access to the virtual server. They don’t provide some of the tools I require, but it looks like installing them myself is possible. Hm….

  3. Yeah, all the affordable hosting deals are great until they fail. Real hosting costs real money, sadly.

But I shall put WestHost on my list for when Site5 lets me down next. I am sure it is only time.
