  1. Ian, you should be old enough to remember the Audi 5000 controversy! I am certain this is a direct consequence (wow, still after > 20 years). It is a warning to put your foot on the brake when shifting from park or neutral into gear. From Wikipedia:

In the United States, the 5000 name was abandoned after Audi received very negative publicity over its “unintended acceleration” incident, a problem exacerbated by a November 1986 CBS News’ 60 Minutes program. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) concluded that the majority of unintended acceleration cases, including all the ones that prompted the 60 Minutes report, were caused by driver error such as confusion of pedals. CBS issued a partial retraction. A legacy of this are the intricate patterns many shifters use, and brake interlock mechanisms to prevent inadvertent shifting into forward or reverse, where the standard was a straight front-back pattern.

  2. Ian, exactly. It is telling you to step on the brake while shifting into gear from P (or N). Nowadays, cars have an interlock and you have to do that anyway. Long ago, it wasn’t the case and you could indeed lurch forward or back shifting out of P. The Audi 5000 was one of the cars that caused the manufacturers and regulations to change.

  3. Just to clarify, the post title wasn’t referring to the displayed message, but to the overall picture – especially in relation to who took it (me!) … Chris maybe had more the response I expected 😉

  4. Are you getting rid, or should I say, did you get rid of the Cab? Wow, if yes I hope you still have the GP. A non MINI Ian would be strange.

  5. I will say my wife’s A4, 2005, has been spot on though, well except for 3 coils, but that’s been it.
