Gibraltar

Leaving Antequera we were headed for Morocco but first we stopped overnight in Gibraltar (because we were relatively close to it and had never been!); it’s necessary to go through immigration between Spain and Gibraltar (both ways) but it doesn’t take long – though we did have to take an Uber to the Spain side of Gibraltar, walk across the border, then get a taxi to our hotel!

Our quick stop allowed us to take the cable car to the Rock of Gibraltar for great views, get close (but not too close!) to some Barbary Macaques, and explore … the first photo here is our first view of Gibraltar while driving towards it in Spain, and the last photo here is looking down to the Gibraltar / Spain border:

We walked down from the top back to our hotel and visited the amazing St Michael’s Cave on the way down – definitely worth the visit! The final photo here is during a music+lights event/show that happens regularly …

 Torcal de Antequera

While staying in Antequera we read about an amazing geological area nearby with fantastic rock formations, called  El Torcal de Antequera – and we had to go visit! It’s much higher than the town so another climbing drive (though not narrow this time); visitors arrive at parking then can choose the “easier” or “harder” hike but even before arriving the scenery is amazing:

We choose the “easier” hike and it was still very challenging for us with a lot of climbing (and going down again!) often with narrow or slippery paths; the views however were worth the effort (and we even located an ammonite fossil that Google Maps pointed us to!):

Antequera

We recently took a trip to Spain to visit my Mum, and stayed in the old town of Antequera, built against a hill with very narrow and winding roads! Our AirBnB turned out to be at the top of the hill with a challenging drive when we arrived late in the evening – but giving us great views the next morning (and in the evening, last two photos in this block):

We also walked down the hill (and back up!), getting lunch and admiring the old buildings, here’s a few more views (the last photo here is looking back up the steep roads and stairs, to where we were staying near the castle wall):

It’s a beautiful town, but if you want to visit then make sure you hire a small car!
