Iceland 2021 black beaches

One of my favorite things in Iceland is the black sand / stone beaches, formed from lava … and we visited a number of them, this first at Snæfellsbær⁩ on the east coast:

Another, actually called Black Beach, that also has amazing lava cliff formations (when we visited here in 2017 the wind was strong enough to knock people over!) …

Iceland 2021 Thingvellir

We visited Thingvellir in 2017 but our time was short, so we returned this trip to spend longer there – it’s a huge split in the rock, and described as between the Europe and USA continental plates; though that’s not precisely true it is still a spectacular place to visit!

Iceland 2021 hot springs

There’s a lot of heat under Iceland and it shows itself in some places as hot springs / bubbling mud … we visited a couple of places on our trip, the first is very thick fog!

There’s also places where the heat is converted to a warm “swimming pool”; the famous one being the Blue Lagoon near the international airport (actually waste water from a hydro-thermal electric power station!); we visited there and another place in the north …
