On my way to work yesterday morning, an annoying slow truck in the fast lane “encouraged” me to get too close to the back of it, and the result was a loud SMACK when a rock from it hit my (almost new) windshield; about 10 minutes later there was a CRACK noise, and a crack appeared just to the lower left on my view through the windshield! By lunchtime, the crack had grown significantly (the tape marks the end of it when I got to work) – but luckily it hasn’t grown much further since then.
From outside, there’s an impressive “starburst” on the windshield – I won’t be able to get this one replaced under warranty!
Be thankful just as I was that it hit your windshield instead of your paint. Windshields are easily replaced and free.
Don’t feel bad Ian,I’m having #7 replaced on Saturday.
Ouch! Any idea as to how much?
I have one of those! Except it goes halfway across the windscreen.
I’d get it replaced, but every time I think about calling the glass man, I get a new star (currently up to 5). I’d be on #8 otherwise.
Dan, I checked with MINI of Peabody and they say the installed replacement cost for the windshield (with rain sensor option) is just under $500 – over half of that total is labor!
Yikes. I can’t remember Ian, do you have the rain sensor?
Oh that SUCKS. I have the rain sensor option as well, and I was figuring more than that. I too just got my first windshield crack. I have a friend that repairs them, and he has attempted to prevent mine from growing, so far so good.
By the way thanks for sending the tickets so fast.
Yes, I do have the rain sensing / auto headlights option.
$500 for the windshield…I hope I don’t break mine. I have the rain sensor too 😦
A friend of mine told me that a glass cutter tool drawn in front of crack will stop it from moving on. Would be worth a try.
Ian:
Check with your local state insurance codes, many states regulate that the windshield can be replaced with no deductible under your auto insurance. It further stipulates that it does not count as an “Incident” to increase your premiums.
It is a matter of safety and therefor it is replaced at no cost to the auto owner.
ow. I think I will live with my crack, (its hidden by the rear view mirror). Until the state says I have to replace it. (MO Law is funny about crakes in the windscreen)
jwardell, it seems that hitting the paint would be less costly than hitting the glass if it is not covered under warranty. $500 is probably due to the rain sensor, which I also have. Ian, I heard Gabe on WRR talk about having an option on his insurance that covered things like this and did not have a deductible. It’s probably worth a talk with your agent.
I received my refund check from the insurance company today – reasonably quick. And there’s not supposed to be any effect on my premium.
