Adding another state to our list, we chose to visit Tupelo the birthplace of Elvis Presley! There was a lot of Elvis around, including just yards from our hotel … more pictures of course (the hardware store is supposed to be where Elvis was purchased his first guitar, rather than a rifle, so beginning his career!):
Another place we’d learned about on YouTube, this one-time iron smelting plant closed down in 1970 but was saved from destruction / clearance and is now a National Historic Landmark. Before leaving Montgomery, we visited the Peace & Justice memorial, a quite tragic place “dedicated to the legacy of enslaved Black people …” with many too many panels listing the names of people lynched in USA even as recently as the 1950s! Too many names (and too many unknown people as well); we found a name from a town only a couple miles from where we live. Every one of the metal boxes represents one county in one state where at least one person was lynched …
It rained through this visit, which seemed very appropriate.
